Who is mari evangelion

However, rather than taking pride in her ability and seeking recognition for it like Asuka, Mari seems to pilot her Evangelion Units simply because she enjoys the act of piloting itself.

NERV appeared to be unaware of this capability. In Evangelion: 2. At times, she is seen singing in the midst of preparing for battle in her unit, Evangelion Unit 08 , although this seems to draw the ire of Asuka. Shinji Ikari : the main protagonist through both Neon Genesis Evangelion , the Rebuild movies, and many other entries in the Evangelion franchise. For example, when she crashes into Shinji, she begins sniffing him and notes that he smells like LCL.

In addition to her appearances in the Evangelion Rebuild movie series, Mari also made an appearance in the official Evangelion manga in an extra chapter. The introduction of Mari into the Evangelion franchise story and character lineup was not an easy decision. Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno and Evangelion Rebuild movie director, Kazuya Tsurumaki had many disagreements of how they were to portray the character.

There are some mecha anime series that feature dozens of unique designs and a wide array of mech warriors that are available for battle. Evangelion deals with a much smaller roster of EVA units and there are a core few that are very iconic as a result.

Mari begins in Unit in Evangelion: 2. Something that both the Evangelion anime series and movies effectively get across is that piloting an Evangelion is even more of a burden than it is a privilege.

There are a small few that exhibit enthusiasm towards the prospect of piloting an EVA, but those that are actually inside of one experience tremendous and ongoing trauma. This makes Mari such a notable exception since she has an avid glee towards her EVA work. Mari even actively enjoys the smell of LCL fluid and she comes up with fun nicknames for her fellow pilots because she views this work as play.

Neon Genesis Evangelion fans have been waiting for over a decade to see the final chapter in the Rebuild series, Evangelion: 3. Mari gets trusted with a mission of this magnitude. Set in , Mari is 16 and a friend of Yui Ikari.

This backstory clashes with the Rebuild movies, but Yoshiyuki Sadamoto, the manga's author, revealed that this isn't meant to be canon. Though Anno struggled with Mari's character, he decided to wing it as the movies progressed.

This explains why Mari's character felt so forced in the first few movies. She was shoved poorly into a story that did not seem to require her, and there was barely any material for fans to build a connection with her on.

However, by the time 3. At first glance, it doesn't make sense that Shinji ended up with Mari instead of Rei or Asuka. But if you let the thought settle, there does seem to be a reason behind the odd pairing. While both Rei and Asuka symbolized Shinji's need to run back to comfort or throw himself into work respectively , Mari symbolized his growth from a traumatized young boy to a stable adult. Think about it: Shinji's biggest fear was socializing and human connection, much like his father.

For most of the show, he was the young boy who preferred the comfort of the things he knew and never voluntarily ventured out into the unknown or strange. After all the hell he'd been through, being with Mari was symbolic of his growth into a young adult who was learning how to connect with people, no matter how strange or unknown they seemed to him.

There's still the argument about Shinji and Mari's relationship not being developed enough. It's important to note that we saw them together as adults — which means they had enough time to get to know each other and grow into a relationship. Why did Fuyutsuki join Gendo and work tirelessly to bring about the end of the world with the Third Impact? Was it because of Yui? Let's find out! Asuka and Rei are some of the most well-written and amazingly fleshed-out characters in the Evangelion series.
